Equipment

  • high-speed blender

Ingredients

  • 8 oz tomato sauce or one 8-oz can
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 6-8 large Medjool dates pitted
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Optional Additions

  • 1-2 tbsp gochujang
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • Remove the pits from the dates (if needed) by carefully slicing lengthwise to split the date open. Pry the pit from the middle and discard it.
  • Add the dates to the blender, along with all other ingredients. Pulse a few times to combine, then blend on high speed for 2-3 minutes or until smooth and thick. Pause as needed to scrape the sides of the blender and ensure all ingredients are well mixed.
  • Transfer to a storage container if not using right away, otherwise, serve with your BBQ favorites such as pulled pork, brisket, smoked sausage, or chicken.
